Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is a governing body, an umbrella that regulates the welfare and affairs of all lawyers in Nigeria.
The Sokoto state chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has made a disclosed that according to the 1999 Constitution as amended to allow for the decentralisation of the Supreme Court which is only cited and situated in the premises of Aso Rock in Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The Sokoto state chapter of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) disclosed that the call is overripe that a division of the Supreme Court was created in each of the three geopolitical zones in the country.
This recommendations call was contained in the communiqué it generated at the end of its 2017 Law Week.
According to the communiqué read by its chairman, Sambo Wali, the Sokoto NBA Chapter called for the restructuring of the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice.
“To boost the confidence in the justice sector, appropriate judicial reforms aimed at speedy dispensation of justice and resolution of disputes should be vigorously pursued.
“Alternative dispute resolution should be encouraged by lawyers as a better means of resolving conflicts.”
It harped on the need to appoint additional high court judges, khadis of the Sharia Court of Appeal and magistrates in Sokoto State, in order to create more judicial divisions.
The Law Week was observed in all the state NBA chapters, the event witnessed several programmes which included the inauguration of the NBA state-of-the-art secretariat, legal clinic to advise the public on legal issues, visitation to inmates and orphanages, prisons and bench forum where members from both sides suggested ways to function optimally in the administration of justice, lectures, novelty match, dinner and award night.
It was further disclosed that the welfare of young lawyers be look into that it is right time for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) as a general governing body of lawyers to continue to advocate for it members interest nationwide.
