They contribute to the social, political, economic development of their community, they are history maker impacting their nation, spreading justice and equity to the nooks and crannies of their nation and giving a word of good conscience to the people that appear before them.

They spread democracy to the world where justice, equity, fairness and good conscience are the bedrock of democratic system.

Today, we shall be looking at a man with vast wealth of knowledge, experience, an impeccable character and integrity in the fore wall of legal system in Nigeria and the judiciary.

Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Samuel Nkwanu Onnoghen popularly called Justice Walter by the member of the bar and bench of the judiciary arm of government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Justice Walter Samuel Nkwanu Onnoghen (CJN) was appointed as the Chief Justice of Nigeria by the National Judicial Council of Nigeria and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the President Muhammad Buhari’s administration and confirmed statutorily by the National House of Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigerian under the senate president Bukola Saraki on the 1st March, 2017.

Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Samuel Nkwanu Onnoghen was born on the 22nd of December, 1950 into the family of Onnoghen at Okurike Town, Biase Local Government Area of Cross Rivers State, Nigeria.

He began his educational journey form Okurike Town in Cross River State, Nigeria; he attended the Presbyterian Primary School, Okurike Town between 1959 and 1965.

Thereafter, the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Onnoghen proceeded to Accra, Ghana to for his secondary school which he attended Odorgorno Secondary School, in Accra, Ghana. He obtained his West African Examination Council certificate for his studentship and successfully passed his examinations between 1967 and 1972.

The Hon. Justice Walter immediately enrolled at Accra Academy, Accra Ghana between 1972 and 1974 for his WAEC (A-Levels) before proceeding to the University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana between 1974 and 1977 to obtain his Bachelor of Law Degree (LL.B Hons.) and graduated with a distinction 2nd Class Upper Division from faculty of law.

 The Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen also enrolled at the Nigerian Law School in Nigeria, to enable him practice as advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Courts of Nigeria which he attended between 1977 and 1978 at the prestigious Lagos Campus, Victoria Island, Lagos State of the Nigerian Law School his Barrister at Law (LLB) certificate.

The Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen cut his legal teeth as a State Counsel under the Ministry of Justice in 1978 till 1979. He further proceeded to form a partnership in the Law Firm of Effiom Ekong & Company, in Calabar State of Nigeria in 1979 till 1988. After acquiring vast legal knowledge and experience, he proceeded to registered his own law firm as Walter Onnoghen & Associates with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), in Calabar, Cross River, Nigeria and he headed the law firm as the Principal Partner/Head of Chamber between 1988 – 1989.

He was appointed as a High Court Judge, by the Cross Rivers State Judiciary in 1989 – 1998

He has been very visible as a Judge with his erudite judgment among his peers and he has chaired several government panel, tribunals etc

He was the Chairman, Cross Rivers State Armed Robbery and Fire Arms Tribunal from 1990 till 1993,

The Chairman, Judicial Enquiry set up by government to look into the Crisis between the University of Calabar, Cross River State and Obufa Esuk Orok Community, in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria sometimes in 1996.

He was appointed by the government as the Chairman, Failed Bank Tribunal, Ibadan Zone in 1998.

He was appointed and transferred to preside over the High Court of Rivers State in 1992 till 2004 and in was also appointed as a Justice of the Court of Appeal in 1998 till 2005.

He was appointed into the apex court in Nigeria as Justice of Supreme Court of Nigeria (JSC), sometime in 2005. Since then he has been very active in the adjudication of justice in Nigeria.

He is a member of the Body of Bencher and Life Bencher; a member fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and several local and international professionals’ bodies in the world. Hon. Justice W.S. Nkanu Onnoghen has attended several conferences and seminars around the world.

On the 10th November, 2016  till 10th February 2017, he was appointed as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria by the federal government of Nigeria.

On the 1st day of March, 2017, the National House of Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria confirmed Hon. Justice Walter Justice Onnoghen as the substantial Chief Justice of Nigeria with immediate effect from March 1st 2017 till date
